I am a 59-year-old American. My specialty is adults who need to use English at work, though I also have five students who are between the ages of 10 and 13. I can help you improve all of your English skills, including speaking to groups. My background is in law; for nearly 20 years I was a legal researcher and writer. I have read more than 5000 appellate court opinions and researched hundreds of subjects. I have a love of the English language, both spoken and written. I enjoy teaching and enjoy working and living in cultures foreign to me. I am a voracious reader, have a great deal of experience as a writer, and have taught writing as part of my general and business English classes. On my rates, at my home, or for students whose office or home is within a 15-minute walk of my home, I will work for 225 per hour. For students further than this the rate is 260 or more, depending on the distance. |
| Education background & teaching experience |
I have been teaching for six years. For over two of these years I have taught adults, with most of my classes being one-to-one. Here in Guangzhou I have been working a great deal with professionals who need to use English in their work, including lawyers, advertisers, financial analysts, and designers. Some of these classes have been with students preparing for TOEFL, IELTS, GRE, or GMAT exams. I am friendly but work hard and do well in one-to-one situations. I have also taught kindergarten, primary school, high school, and vocational college, tutored all ages privately, done corporate training, edited, and written a book on Legal English. I have been in China for a total of four years, a year and a half in 2007-8 and for the past two and a half years here in Guangzhou. |
| Teaching method & materials |
I have used a variety of Longman-Pearson texts, and some from Oxford and Cambridge University Presses. The method and material will depend on what you, the student, want. A textbook is a good idea as it provides some structure to the class. Writing is important too, even if you want to focus on speaking, as it helps you increase your vocabulary and improve your usage. |
